Search Engine Optimization or SEO is the biggest factor in driving traffic to your website. When done right, you will gain constant visitors from search engines to your website.
SEO terms and their definitions:
Search Engine Optimization or SEO for short, is the science of customizing your website elements in order to achieve the best search engine results. There are two times of SEO - On-page SEO and Off-page SEO. So what makes Search Engine Optimization so important? Every time a search is being made on Google, Yahoo, MSN or others, there are millions of results being shown. For the most part, the person searching doesn’t go beyond the first few pages and most of the time not even past page one. If your website is listed on page 20 or 100 or 1000, it will never get seen. The best solution to that problem is to do Search Engine Optimization.
Search Engine: There are two faces of a search engine, the back-end and the front-end. The back end is a software that uses different applications to collect web pages and information about them. The information that it collects consists of page content, links, and most importantly for SEO - the keywords and phrases that indicate what the website is about. The collected data is then stored and indexed in a database. The second part of a search engine, the front end, is simply a user interface with a search input box. When a user puts in the desired search term, the database is queried and results displayed.
Spiders or Crawlers: Spiders, Crawlers and Robots are invisible and crawl websites in order to collect URLs and Information about them.
Search Algorithm: Search Algorithm is the foundation of every search engine. The Search Algorithm takes a keyword or phrase being searched for, looks up the search engine database and returns the best possible website page url.
Ranking: Each search engine has a different and unique criteria on how to rank websites. Most of the time, there are hundreds of factors that go into Search Engine Ranking. Some of them include linking, update frequency, traffic, location and many more. More details about those later.
PR or Page Rank: a ranking term used by Google to measure websites’ importance
Anchor Text: Text associated with the link to your website
Meta Tags: Invisible to website visitors, html code that provides the search engine with keywords and phrases that identify the type of content presented on your website. There are many other Meta Tags that identify geographic location, website language, website author, instructions for robots and more. More on this later.
Site Maturity: The age of the domain and website, it’s known that the older the domain, the more better it ranks on search engines.
Sitemap: There are two types
1. Sitemap for Search Engines - A list of all your pages with url links so that search engine spiders can crawl every single page and not miss anything. Especially useful in dynamic websites, where pages are created from the database on the fly.
2. Sitemap for visitors - A visual representation of your website structure to aid in navigation
Alt Tag: HTML Attribute to provide a text description for an image, when the image cannot be displayed
Backlink: Link originating on one page and linking to your website
Conversion: A percentage of your visitors that purchase a product or service
Keywords: Words or phrases used by search engines to determine websites topic and contents
Reciprocal LInk: A linking strategy that involves two websites linking to one another
SERP: Search Engine Result Pages
